10 MidCity’s for Shropshire County Council
At the end of November 2008 CVI (Commercial Vehicle Innovation) has delivered 10 MidCity’s to Shropshire County Council in England for an innovative new ShropshireLink demand responsive rural bus service. ShropshireLink is introduced to improve the environmental impact of the rural bus services and access to the local market town and local facilities for rural communities in order to meet new accessibility targets.

MidCity MLF 76-136

Based on the Volkswagen Crafter CR50 long wheelbase with a 136 PS, 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine, the vehicles were supplied by CVI (Part of Volkswagen Van Centre Edinburgh), the partner of VDL Bus & Coach for the sales, after sales and service of mini and midi buses in Great Britain and Ireland. The MidCity’s are converted by VDL Bus & Coach who extended the wheelbase and lowered the floor to provide seats for up to 16 passengers, including a ramped entrance and space for up to three wheelchair users.

Advantages

The MidCity’s are more compact and economical with less impact on the environment than other traditional buses available. This delivers several advantages: these buses can more easily access remote rural areas while offering a better environmental choice and lower fuel costs. In addition, Shropshire Council forecasts that the new bus service will increase accessibility of all the rural homes to a local bus service on a minimum of two days per week from 57 percent to 95 percent.

Unlike a traditional bus service ShropshireLink is not restricted to a set route or timetable. Instead, these buses travel flexibly within certain areas and where appropriate the bus will go direct to the passenger’s door, and can be booked up to seven days in advance via a dedicated booking and information line.

Stuart McKenzie, Sales and Operations Manager, CVI said: ‘we are really proud to handover this impressive new fleet of buses to Shropshire County Council and wish them all the best with their new rural bus service. The quality and durability of the vehicles themselves was obviously important to the Council, but equally important was the innovation and the CVI/VDL Bus & Coach after sales support of this concept’.
